International Consortium for Social Development

Call for Proposals For Hosting the 2011 International Symposium

Proposals due October 15, 2008

The International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD) is receiving proposals from organizations interested in hosting the 17th Biennial International Symposium to be held in summer 2011.  Proposals will be considered at the ICSD Executive Council and Board meetings in fall 2008.

ICSD’s previous Biennial Symposia have been held in regions throughout the world.  The countries that have hosted the Symposia include Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Egypt, Finland, Great Britain, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Portugal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and the United States.  The 16th Biennial Symposium will be held in Monterrey, Mexico in July 2009.  Proposals for the 2011 Biennial Symposium will be welcomed from any part of the world.  Organizations wishing to submit proposals should be guided by the following information:

·        The host and sponsor of the Symposium can be any type of organization concerned with social development (such as a university, social agency, or NGO).

·        The Biennial Symposium normally lasts 4.5 days and it is usually held in July or August.

·        The Symposium is  planned by two Co-Chairs who work closely together.  The ICSD Executive Council appoints one Co-Chair and the other is selected by the host organization.  These Co-Chairs are assisted by two committees:  the Symposium Organizing Committee which includes representatives appointed by the ICSD from throughout the world, and the Local Organizing Committee which is appointed by the host organization.

·        The Symposium, which always focuses on social development, includes presentations by experts in this area as well as papers selected from among the proposals that are submitted.  The Co-Chairs develop a theme for the Symposium and issue a “Call for Proposals” that addresses this theme.   Proposals are welcome from people throughout the world, and individuals from the host country are especially encouraged to submit proposals.

·        Efforts are made to keep the cost of attending the Symposium as low as possible in order to enable people from less-developed parts of the world to participate.  Outside sponsors are sought to contribute to the support of the Symposium.  ICSD does not seek to make a profit on symposia.    Extra revenue produced by a symposium is set aside for scholarship funds for people from less-developed countries at the next biennial symposium.

·        During the Symposium, a scholarship breakfast is held and participants contribute to a scholarship for students in social development in the host country.

·        The person selected to get the Dan Sanders Peace and Social Justice lecture will receive a $400.00 honoraria.  Honoraria are not given to other speakers, although expenses might be paid in some cases.

·        The Local Organizing Committee is usually allocated advance planning money of  $1,000-$2,000.

Proposals from interested organizations should include the following components:

·        Information on the organization wishing to host the Symposium should be provided.  This should describe the structure of the organization, its auspices, and the organization’s involvement with social development. There should be assurances that the organization has sufficient resources and experience to host the conference. The proposal must include an official letter of invitation from the proposed host organization.

·        There should be a description of local sponsors and the financial support that they might contribute.  This financial support can be in cash or in kind.  For example, support can take the form of sponsorship of dinners, registration and/or housing scholarships for participants from developing countries, subsidized housing for all participants, the provision of bus transportation and/or box lunches for field visits, or other type of assistance that will help offset the cost of implementing the symposium.

·        A description of proposed conference facilities should be included, along with assurances that these facilities will be adequate to meet the needs of the symposium and will be available.

·        There should be assurances of inexpensive hotels, dormitory or other living accommodations at or near the proposed Symposium site.  It is important that accommodations be affordable for members from less- developed countries.

·        The food services that will be available to participants should be described.  There should also be a description of medical resources that are available either onsite or near the Symposium.

·        Evidence of convenient and reasonable transportation for participants from various parts of the world should be provided.  Airlines often provide discount prices for group travel of conference attendees.

·        There should be a discussion of security and human rights considerations in the host country.

·        The local social development organizations that might be visited as field sites during the Symposium should be identified.

·        There should be a description of the proposed host organization’s previous experience in hosting and managing conferences and symposia.  This should include a discussion of special supports and/or needs that the organization anticipates in planning and hosting the Symposium.

Proposals for the 2011 Symposium should be submitted to:
